DART Phase Three and Four
The Dar es Salaam Rapid Transport (DART) project aims at improving the transport mobility, accessibility, safety and quality of transport services, by addressing the problem of urban congestion in Dar es Salaam and its implementation will facilitate movement of people and goods in the City of Dar es Salaam through exclusive system. This endeavor will enhance the quality of life by reducing air pollution and decongestion of traffic. The project will change the way urban development policies and in particular to management of city’s transportation system and it will inspire other Cities to consider early planning to minimize investment costs of similar projects in the future.
Phase Three of the DART system runs for 23.6 km from Old postal office in city centre to the Gongo la Mboto neighbourhood to the south west of the city, with a branch from Kariakoo through Uhuru to TAZARA. The corridor is composed of: Maktaba Street, Bibi Titi Mohammed Street, Julius Nyerere Road, Mandela road (TAZARA to Buguruni) and Uhuru Street. Phase 3 is designed to have 174 number of trunk buses with a capacity of 140–160 passengers and 399 number of feeder buses with a capacity of 60–80 passengers. A total of 31 stations have been proposed for this corridor.
