Biography of Dr Bugwesa Zablon Katale

Dr Bugwesa Zablon Katale is a doctor of  Veterinary Medicine and a Principal Research Scientist. He holds  Doctor of Philosophy (PhD; DPhil) from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) (2011-2015), MSc Medical Parasitology and Entomology from Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College (KCM-College) (2006-2008) and a  Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM)  from Sokoine University of Agriculture, Morogoro, Tanzania (1997-2002 ). He has been a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) from 2016 to 2019.

He is currently a Director of Research Coordination and Promotion at Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH). Before being promoted, he was a Principal Research Office. Also he worked as Principal Research (2010 - 2019) and Wildlife Research Veterinarian (2008-2010) at Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI). Before joining TAWIRI he was employed at Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) as a Wildlife Veterinary Officer from 2003-2006. 

He also have published 25 scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and presented over 18 papers in various conferences. He also had been sceuring academic award and research funding such as Research career Fellowship on Clinical Application of Whole genome sequencing in multidrug resistance tuberculosis in Tanzania – European and Developing Countries Clinical Trail Partnerships (EDCTP) 2020-2023; Postdoctoral Research fellowship on Genomics of Antimicrobial Resistance (SACIDS-ACE), 2017-2019; Postdoctoral Research fellowship- Welcome Trust (WT) Grant to Southern African Centre for Infectious Diseases Surveillance (SACIDS) for PhD at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, 2016-2017; PhD fellowship – Welcome Trust (WT) Grant to Southern African Centre for Infectious Diseases Surveillance (SACIDS) for PhD at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, 2011-2015 and MSc sponsorship, Medical Parasitology and Entomology at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College, Tumaini University, Moshi, Tanzania - Belgium Technical Cooperation (BTC) 2006-2008.

Dr Bugwesa is an incumbent member of Board of Directors of Tanzania Livestock Research Institute (TALIRI), Board of Governors at Ifakara Health Institute  and Board of Governors at International Centre for Genetics and Biotechnology.
